Travelling with kids? Here are some fun options to consider when visiting Agnes

Here are our Top 10 things to do with kids in Agnes Water and 1770, with special mention of things to do in Agnes Water with toddlers and small children.

1. Take your old bread to the marina and feed the fish from the pontoon. It is sure to get a few excited giggles from the young ones. Afterwards, grab fish and chips from Rusty Pelican, or a baby-cino and award-winning vanilla slice from the marina cafe. After dark, Katrina's wine bar and the Baracca's food van are great places to enjoy an evening dinner watching the sun set over Round Hill creek. Remember to bing repellant as the midges can sometimes be overwhelming - dress the kids in long pants and sleeves in case.

2. Take a 1770 LARC! Tour. For little ones (1-4) we would recommend a sunset tour, it is quicker than the day tour and cool with plenty of great eco-info for the little animal lovers (and super fun "splash down!"). For the older kids (8+) that are willing to do a bit more walking and spend a longer day, the Paradise tour is a must with SANDBOARDING and a tour of the lighthouse.

3. Take your scooters/ bikes/ skateboards for a ride along the 1770 Air Sea Rescue Park which has playgrounds at each end. If you park in the carpark near the 1770 Camping Ground end (near the playground and BBQ gazebos) there is a lovely run of flat paths along the foreshore, an ideal distance for little legs. They sell ice cream both ends, at the Kiosk at the 1770 Camping Ground and also at "The 1770 Tree Hotel", where you can sit on the green grass and enjoy the view of the beach and river. Bring your togs and towel as the beach here (locals call it "the river") is ideal for little ones that are hesitant of waves - just watch out for strong currents and reef shoes are recommended if kids want to swim around the rocks as there are oysters and stonefish.

4. Go Rock Hopping on Main Beach. If you park in the main beach car park at the end of Agnes Street (there is also an awesome playground here) you can access the main patrolled beach of Agnes Water. Towards the point, you will find numerous rock pools with creatures aplenty! Also great smoothies and juices at Holidays Cafe on the beachfront there.

5. Take a walk on the Paperbark Forest Trail on Springs Road, Agnes Water. This beautiful boardwalk features stepping stones and is sure to please adults and kids alike. Please be mindful of the environment here, the ferns are delicate - please stick to the boardwalks and take any litter with you. A very easy 10-minute walk.

6. Walk the Butterfly Trail in 1770. Park at Captain Cook's monument and take a beautiful bush trail with some breathtaking views out to the point. You might see turtles, dolphins or if the season permits - whales. This walk is probably more suited to children

5+. About 15 minutes into the walk you will reach the cabbage palm forest where the butterflies hang out en masse - this too is seasonal. Butterflies are usually in abundance from March-May.

7. Get a family photo session. Prior to your arrival touch base with some local photographers and arrange a family portrait on one of our incredible beaches. All of the local photographers here know where the "best spots for the best shots" are, making the memories of your holiday last a lifetime. Contact Mia from Eyeswide Imaging for a fantastic family shoot on the beach.

8. Go 4WDing in Deepwater National Park or Eurimbula National Park. These are located about 10 minutes from the centre of town. If you have a 4WD, it is a great way to spend a half day. We recommend Wreck Rock or Flat Rock or Middle Rock in Deepwater National Park. Pack lunch and utilise the picnic and day-use areas. If you are more adventurous camping in these parks is available. If your young child won't sleep... go 4WDing.

9. Visit the reef! Prior to your arrival arrange a reef trip to Lady Musgrave Island. The snorkelling is beautiful, and so is the island tour. Reef trips depart daily from the 1770 Marina, weather permitting. More suited to kids aged 10+ as the trip out can cause motion sickness. Packing something salty (like pringles) and sweet lollies, or a bubbly soft drink sipped slowly can help settle bellies (don't forget to take your motion sickness tablets too - you can purchase from the pharmacy).

10. Learn to surf! Probably more suited to older kids, take a surf lesson and learn how to hang 10 like a pro. With little ones, we recommend bringing a small life jacket to the beaches so they can practise "surfing" on boogie boards. Stylez Surf School offers many options for kids, beginners and mums. You can also hire foam boards from Reef 2 Beach (chat to Grom) if you wish to try hanging ten without an instructor.

Bring bikes, scooters and skate boards! There are plenty of pathways in and around Agnes Water to explore!

Here our top tips for readying your investment property for Airbnb guests 1. Good quality mattress protectors + a spare for each bed size. Don't skimp on the flimsy, thin ones. Pillowtop protectors are fantastic for larger mattresses, especially older ones. Pillowtop mattress protectors feel so luxurious and will be a winner with the most discerning guests - a great way to make a hard mattress feel cosy. 2. Good quality pillow protectors; the cotton blend ones with zippers are great. Don't waste your time on the cheap dual-pack protectors from Target etc., as they disintegrate after a few months. 3. Be prepared to replace your bedspreads and pillows every 12-24 months. Nothing is more off-putting to a guest than a mouldy or stained pillow. Speaking of stains, sunscreen sometimes interacts with the water used at the laundry and creates fluorescent yellow stains on white sheets/ towels/ pillowcases. Choosing highly patterned bedspreads or dark colours for towels/ bedspreads/pillowcases and tea towels to remedy this is helpful. 4. Remove any precious items from your property, as accidental breakage is unfortunate and creates mistrust of guests. It is easy to paint them all with the same brush after one breakage, so when styling your home, think of cheaper options that won't break the bank (or your heart) when you need to replace them. Check out stores like Target, Big W and IKEA when stocking your property with decorative furnishings and kitchenware. 5. Throw blankets! Waffle blankets and large throws in your living room can potentially save your couch upholstery from stains and mould. If you can, purchase outdoor furniture/weather-resistant upholstery for your lounge rooms as they repel mould, are easy to launder and can handle moisture from damp swimmers. Parents often sit their young children on throw blankets for crafts/eating/play etc. so again, think dark colours or something cheap that can be replaced every few years. 6. Portable heaters. If you don't have reverse cycle AC to the larger living areas of your property, please ensure you have at least one little portable heater as, surprisingly, Agnes Water can get quite cold in the winter months. Most beachside properties are designed for Summer use and are not great at retaining warmth. For Summer, bath robes are a lovely touch and make couples feel pampered. 7. Use your home A LOT! We encourage our owners to utilise their holiday homes for an extended holiday of at least a fortnight each year. If you don't get to use it, you may come to resent guests for booking it when you want it! Book dates a year in advance; you can always release them. Furthermore, it pays to stay aware of your home's natural ageing process and any high wear and tear areas that might need future attention. Painting, replacement of roofing screws, appliances and re-varnishing floors etc. are big costs that come around every decade so ensure you have a special fund set aside for these maintenance tasks and unexpected appliance replacements. 8. Blackout curtains in bedrooms. Most guests see holidays as a time for sleep-ins, particularly guests with young children. Please ensure your bedrooms have blackout blinds for privacy and restful slumber. Many guests feel exposed and vulnerable if there are no coverings on windows, especially in a neighbourhood they don't know... Even if your property is on acreage :) 9. Unlimited WIFI and a smart TV have become one of the most sought-after amenities on AirBnB; make sure you opt for unlimited data so that guests can screen their favourite shows on the internet. Since free-to-air TV is patchy in Agnes (particularly in the Sunrise estate) ensure you have consistent, high-speed unlimited data. 10. Consider a picnic set for your property so guests can take non-breakable, reusable cups, wine glasses and plates to pool areas and beaches. Again, don't buy expensive; cheap items from Ikea or Target are perfect. 11. Make sure you have 2 x cutting boards; always provide a plastic one available for cutting meat that can be properly sanitised. If you provide food containers, ensure they are all labelled with your house name so they don't go accidentally go home with guests. 12. Label, Label, LABEL. Especially your linen in case of mix-ups at the laundry. Don't forget tea towels, oven mitts, table runners.... iron-on labels are great, we recommend iron on labels from this website . 13. Vermin-proof your house. In winter, our native bush critters love to come indoors and find warm appliances to nest in. Native bush rats often eat through dishwasher, dryer and washing machine outlet hoses, so ensure these are all wrapped in metal conduit. Plug holes in, around and underneath your home wherever critters can enter. We will not put poison out for rats and mice as they are native marsupials. Poison can have a secondary effect, killing owls and other birds of prey, scrub turkeys, snakes, goannas and dingoes. 14. Special touches. Coffee machines or plungers with good quality grinds, teapots + tea selection, bath robes, air diffusers with essential oils, indoor plants, a book swap area, board games, DVD player + DVDs, cards etc. are all wonderful touches that make guests feel at home. If there's something you can't live without at your home, consider providing the same at your airbnb! For more tips, questions or to list your holiday home with us... email us today.
